Nokia Corp. on Thursday said it delayed the release of Symbian 3, the latest version of its smartphone operating system, because it fell short of internal quality guidelines, as the Finnish mobile giant promised the platform would be more intuitive, fun and faster than the existing version and power several products by the end of the year.

The Nokia 6500 Classic is a standard Nokia phone that is mainly used for communicative purposes. You will not find the phone offered by U.S. carriers, but it is possible to buy it unlocked for $279 from retailers.

The 6500 is of a basic candy-bar shape with a thin profile. The size of the phone is 4.32 inches tall by 1.77 inches wide by 0.37 inch deep, its weight is 3.31 ounces. The screen is 2-inch with 16.7-million-color support and 320×240 pixels. As the resolution is high, the colors are bright, and graphics and photos are sharp and vivid. The navigation array is large. Nevertheless, the keypad buttons are a bit cramped. The letters and numbers are too little so it is not convenient for people with bad eye-sight. Unfortunately, there is no volume button on the side of the 6500.

The basic features of the 6500 Classic are text and multimedia messaging, vibrate mode, alarm, world clock, stopwatch, organizer, calendar, notepad, a calculator, speaker phone, and voice recorder. Higher-end features are as follows: stereo Bluetooth, audio messaging, voice commands, converter, USB mass storage, and Web-based e-mail. Though a 2-megapixel camera takes photos in seven resolutions, their quality is average as one can notice a lot of noise. The camera includes a flash. There is a video recorder in the camera that can take clips for 10 seconds.

The music player is good enough and supports MP3, MP4, AAC, eAAC+, and WMA files. The battery life of the 6500 is able to last during 4 hours of talk and 9 days of standby.

The Nokia 6500 Classic offers a good call quality. It also provides a functional feature set and a smart display. A lot of people like the 6500 for its simple and modest design.

The keypad of the Nokia 6500 Classic is a bit cramped and there is no special volume control. The photo quality is not very good.

It is necessary to say that the Nokia 6500 Classic is a common mobile phone for people who do not need too much from their phones, just making calls. The Nokia 6500 Classic is not too sophisticated and the most important: the phone is affordable.

HELSINKI (Reuters) - Nokia Oyj lowered it share of global handset sales after recalculating the size of the market and the scale of the growing "grey" sector in unlicensed and counterfeit phones.

Nokia said on Friday the cellphone market totaled 1.26 billion phones last year, above its earlier forecast of 1.14 billion, and reduced its share of sales to 34 percent from an earlier forecast of 38 percent.

Research group Gartner said the grey market -- mostly in China, India and Latin America -- totaled 145 million phones last year.

Nokia said new measurement tools enable it to better estimate the number of handsets being sold by some new players.

"These include vendors of legitimate, as well as unlicensed and counterfeit, products with manufacturing facilities primarily centered around certain locations in Asia and other emerging markets," Nokia said.

Nokia repeated it expected the overall 2010 phone market to grow 10 percent while its market share would be unchanged at 34 percent.

The comments boosted Nokia shares, which trimmed an earlier high of 10.91 euros to settle at 10.80, up 2 percent, by 1539 GMT.

"This is a good thing for Nokia because it is really showing that they want to measure the real market and grey market has been a big driver in 2009," said Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi.

"It is an opportunity for them to go after and try and actually win over users in that segment as well," he said.

Apple patent and trademark skirmishes through the years - CNET

Sometimes it doesn't take more than a cease-and-desist letter, or some good backroom negotiating skills for Apple to get what it wants.

The use of the term "pod" was one. Getting the trademark on the name "iPhone" was another. But plenty of times Apple turned to lawyers and mounds of paperwork to defend its intellectual property, or more often, defend itself.

The most recent legal wrangling Apple has engaged in willingly is the high-profile suit against HTC, maker of smartphones like the Eris and Nexus One. It's assumed by many to be a thinly veiled shot at Google, who makes the Android operating system that runs on those phones. When Apple filed the legal complaint earlier this month, CEO Steve Jobs was quoted as saying, "We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We've decided to do something about it. We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours."

That, of course, goes both ways. In the past three years, Apple has been on the receiving end of may patent suits related to almost every aspect of its business: the iPhone, Apple TV, iPhone apps, employees, accessories, and the Mac itself. Here's a look back at some of Apple's more interesting intellectual property-related legal dustups.

January 2010 Kodak v. Apple
Earlier this year Kodak targeted Apple's iPhone along with competitor RIM's BlackBerry. The photo company accused both of illegally using a digital imaging patent it owns to preview images. But Kodak took its claims against Apple a few steps further, filing two more suits: One accuses Apple of violating two patents related to image preview and the ability to process images of different resolutions.The second claims infringement by Apple in a process by which one computer program can call on another to carry out certain functions. The first suit relates specifically to the iPhone, while the second is being targeted against any Apple product using that specific process.

October 2009 Nokia v. Apple
Nokia sued Apple over 10 patents the Finnish phone maker says it owns related to wireless handsets. The largest handset maker in the world took legal action when negotiations failed and Apple refused to pay to license any of the patents. Nokia has already reached licensing agreement on the patents in question with 40 other companies, including "most of the major device makers," according to Nokia. Apple returned the favor shortly after, countersuing Nokia over 13 patents it owns including mobile technologies related to real-time signal processing methods, list scrolling and document translation, scaling, and rotation on a touch-screen display.

May 2009 Tune Hunter v. everyone
Apple was named along with several other companies in Tune Hunter's patent infringement dispute with popular iPhone app Shazam. Shazam "listens" to songs and identifies them, and is available on a variety of mobile and Web platforms. Tune Hunter found Shazam's methods too close to its own patent for "a music identification/purchasing system," and sued almost every company tangentially related to Shazam, including Apple, AT&T, Samsung, Amazon.com, Napster, Motorola, Gracenote, Verizon Wireless, LG Electronics, and Pantech Wireless.

December 2008 EZ4Media v. Apple
It might be just a "hobby" for Apple, but the Apple TV was also lawsuit fodder. Set-top box maker EZ4Media claimed that Apple TV, AirPort Express, and Macintosh computers infringe on patents owned by the Illinois-based company. The patents were obtained by EZ4Media from Universal Electronics. EZ4Media filed the lawsuit because it found it very curious that the Apple TV was introduced a little over a year after Apple's hiring of three former Universal Electronics employees that had had access to inside information about the workings of Universal Electronics' set-top technology.

July 2008 Apple v. Psystar
You'd have to have been blind in both eyes not to have seen this one coming. Though Apple waited three months after Florida-based Psystar began selling its own non-Mac computers with Mac OS X installed, it was obvious to most industry observers Apple wasn't going to let this one slide. Apple eventually pounced, accusing Psystar of breaking Apple's Mac OS X user license agreement, which allows the software to be installed only on Apple-branded machinery, along with copyright infringement, induced copyright infringement, and trademark infringement.
Apple prevailed in the end. A judge ruled that Psystar violated Apple's exclusive reproduction right, distribution right, and right to create derivative works, and ordered the company to immediately stop selling its Mac clones. Psystar also agreed to pay Apple $2.65 million in damages.

May 2008 Man & Machine v. Apple, CBS
A Maryland company came out swinging against the odd couple of Apple and CBS over the rights to the name "Mighty Mouse." Man & Machine claimed its chemical-resistant and waterproof mouse, called Mighty Mouse, was being sold to hospitals a year before Apple came out with its single-button mouse of the same name. CBS (the publisher of CNET) was ensnared in the suit because owns the rights to the Mighty Mouse cartoon and had licensed the use of the name to Apple. The network was named in the lawsuit because Man & Machine says it doesn't have the right to license the name. Both Man & Machine and CBS had trademark applications filed for the name.

December 2007 Klausner v. Apple
The holder of a patent on visual voicemail took on two much bigger opponents before turning its sights on Apple. After eliciting huge damages payouts from AOL and Vonage, Klausner sued Apple for patent infringement involving the visual voice mail system used in the iPhone. The case never went to trial. Apple avoided that by signing a license for the technology in question.

Summer 1999 Apple v. iMac rip-offs
Between July and August 1999, Apple went on the offensive against iMac lookalikes. The company sued Daewoo, E-machines, and Sotec over desktops that resembled its colorful all-in-one machine a little too closely. Apple's litigation against the companies alleged violations of trade dress, which refers to the distinctive style or look of a product. Apple argued that the all-in-one systems from its competitors were too similar to the iMac in design and would cause confusion among Apple customers. Apple eventually prevailed, though it wasn't a given that they would at the time. Historically, courts had not extended trademark protection to a product's design. But at the time they were just beginning to grant trademark protection to "stylized" items on the grounds that novel industrial design can communicate a distinctive idea or image.

Apple's right to name its one-button mouse Mighty Mouse came under legal fire from a company with a mouse of the same name.

February 1998 Imatec v. Apple
A two-year legal battle ensued before Imatec's suit against Apple's ColorSync software was dismissed. A district court rejected the $1.1 billion lawsuit filed by New York-based Imatec in 1998. The suit alleged that Apple had infringed three U.S. patents related to color calibration of computer equipment filed by Imatec President Hanoch Shalit. A judge eventually determined that neither Imatec nor Shalit owned the patents in question. ColorSync was an Apple product that allowed users to ensure that colors in printed documents closely match the colors that appear on a computer screen.

1988 Apple v. Microsoft and HP
The most famous Mac v. Windows battle is also the most infamous Apple-related litigation. Apple tried to sue Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard to stop them from using graphical user interface elements that looked a lot like those in Apple's Lisa and Mac OS. Apple in this case, did not prevail. The court ruled that the copyright law at the time did not allow patent protection for "the idea of a graphical user interface, or the idea of a desktop metaphor."

To confuse matters even further, in the middle of that case, Xerox decided to sue Apple for the same thing, alleging that Apple's interface was too closely based on an unlicensed Xerox graphical user interface. That lawsuit was dismissed because the statute of limitations had expired.

Apple's suit against Microsoft and HP was almost entirely a failure. All of the claims were dismissed with the exception of one: the court ruled that the trash can and folder icons from HP's software did infringe. Apple did appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, but the court declined to hear the case.

Nokia Design By Community Wants Your Phone Design - UberGizmo (blog)

Do you think that Nokia phones aren't as cool as they could be? Well, you might be able to have some say this time, as Nokia has launched its Design by Community initiative, allowing users to create their ideal concept device. You'll be able to tweak the screen size, screen type, keypad layout, buttons, and screen ratio. The weird thing is that there's a meter that lets you know if you're creating a device that's "too way out there" or "not ambitious enough". If Nokia is trying to get a fresh perspective on things, wouldn't having a meter to nudge people in a certain direction be counterproductive?

Voting for the display and user interface begins on March 15th; size and shape of the phone on March 22nd; material choices on March 29th; operating system on April 5th; connectivity on April 12th; camera on April 19th and finally, enhancements on April 26th.

The winning device will be turned into a design concept and revealed in May, but the bad news is that Nokia doesn't have any plans to realize the concept, so you may not see your dream phone on the market after all.

Nokia Will Launch Music Service in India - PC World

Nokia will launch an online music service in India in the first half of this year, a spokeswoman of the company in India said on Thursday.

The service offered under Nokia's "Comes With Music" program will be available to buyers of certain models of high-end Nokia phones, and will consist of a one-year free, unlimited download of music.

The unlimited download for a year is an entitlement that will come with new purchases of select phones in Nokia's E, N, and XpressMusic ranges of handsets, the spokeswoman said.

The "Comes With Music" program has already been launched in some other countries, with the duration of the free downloads varying from one to two years.

The company does not have plans at this point to sell music through the India site, the spokeswoman said.

The music will be protected using digital rights management (DRM) technology, and users can retain the music they have downloaded after the one-year subscription is over.

Users can download the music either to their computers, or directly to their mobile phones, the spokeswoman said.

The company will be offering music both from international and local Indian labels.

Nokia has filed a patent with the US patents office for a phone that can work continuously without requiring to be plugged in for a recharge. The phone will convert energy from the owner's motion to charge itself.

The phone, having heavier components, such as the radio transmitter circuit and battery, are supported on a sturdy frame. The frame can move along sides and in up and down direction with the help of rails fitted inside the phone. The rails will have strips of piezoelectric crystals that would generate current when compressed by the frame and the motion generates electricity. This charge is then fed into the battery, keeping the phone charged-up through movements such as walking or shaking. The idea is similar to the one which is being used in watches, which use motion to charge their batteries.

Since this is just a patent application, it might take a few years for Nokia to use piezoelectricity and kinetic energy in their phones. We are really excited to hear more about this from Nokia

Apple practices 'legal alchemy' to mask IP theft, claims Nokia - Computerworld

Computerworld - Nokia last week asked a federal judge to toss out Apple's antitrust claims, saying the iPhone maker indulged in "legal alchemy" when it tried to divert attention from its "free-riding" of Nokia's intellectual property.

The filing last Thursday was the latest salvo in a battle that began in October 2009 when Finnish handset maker Nokia sued Apple, saying the iPhone infringed on 10 of its patents ,and that the U.S. company was trying "to get a free ride on the back of Nokia's innovation." Nokia demanded royalties on all iPhones sold since Apple introduced the smartphone in June 2007.

Apple countered in December with a lawsuit of its own that not only claimed Nokia infringed 13 of its patents, but that Nokia also violated antitrust law by legally attacking Apple after it declined to pay what it called "exorbitant royalties" and refused to give Nokia access to iPhone patents.

It was the six non-patent claims by Apple that Nokia asked U.S. District Court Judge Gregory Sleet to throw out last week.

"These non-patent counterclaims are designed to divert attention away from free-riding off of Nokia's intellectual property, a practice Apple evidently believes should only be of paramount concern when it is the alleged victim," charged Nokia in the motion.

Nokia urged Sleet to dismiss Apple's claims. "Sometimes a patent dispute is just a patent dispute," Nokia said of its fight with Apple after licensing negotiations broke down. "Through what charitably could be called an attempt at legal alchemy, Apple employs revisionist history, misleading characterizations, unsupported allegations and flawed and contradictory legal theories to turn these fruitless negotiations into a multi-count federal lawsuit," Nokia charged.

Both Nokia and Apple have also filed infringement actions with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) to block imports of each other's phones, and in the case of Nokia's filing, virtually every Apple hardware product, including iPods and Macs. A separate lawsuit, which covers the patents alleged in the ITC complaint, was put on hold two weeks ago by Sleet pending the Washington D.C. agency's ruling.

It will be some time before the original case is heard by a jury. According to a schedule proposed last week, the Nokia and Apple lawsuits won't go to trial until April or May 2012.

Apple has also sued Taiwanese handset manufacturer HTC for patent infringement. HTC makes Google's flagship Nexus One, as well as nearly a dozen other phones that rely on Google's Android mobile operating system.

Nokia trims share of larger handset market - Reuters

HELSINKI (Reuters) - Nokia Oyj lowered it share of global handset sales after recalculating the size of the market and the scale of the growing "grey" sector in unlicensed and counterfeit phones.

Research group Gartner said the grey market -- mostly in China, India and Latin America -- totaled 145 million phones last year.

Nokia said new measurement tools enable it to better estimate the number of handsets being sold by some new players.

Nokia repeated it expected the overall 2010 phone market to grow 10 percent while its market share would be unchanged at 34 percent.

The comments boosted Nokia shares, which trimmed an earlier high of 10.91 euros to settle at 10.80, up 2 percent, by 1539 GMT.

"This is a good thing for Nokia because it is really showing that they want to measure the real market and grey market has been a big driver in 2009," said Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi.

"It is an opportunity for them to go after and try and actually win over users in that segment as well," he said.

Moreover, users can also go to Tools -> Software updates so as to immediately check for the new version and start the installation.

The Nokia Ovi Suite 2.1 was released in a final flavor only last month, after being launched in a beta flavor at the beginning of the year. As stated above, the app is meant to replace all previously released PC applications from Nokia, and enables users to sync devices, back up files, transfer music, install maps, and more. With Nokia Ovi Suite 2.1, users can also benefit from support for Microsoft's Windows 7 OS, which was released in October last year.

HELSINKI, March 12 (Reuters) - Nokia Oyj (NOK1V.HE), the world's top cellphone maker, said the handset market last year was larger than it had previously forecast due to more accurate measurement of unlicensed and counterfeit production.

Nokia said the cellphone market totalled 1.26 billion phones last year, above its earlier forecast of 1.14 billion.

It said it raised the forecast due to improved measurement processes and tools that enable it to better estimate the number of handsets sold by certain new entrants.

It said this new forecast cut its own market share to 34 percent, compared with its earlier forecast of 38 percent.

Nokia repeated it expected the 2010 phone market to grow 10 percent, also according to its new forecast, while its market share would be unchanged at 34 percent. (Reporting by Tarmo Virki; Editing by Dan Lalor)

Nokia Self Charging Phone Another Incredible Invention. A lot of innovation has been going on, and the effects are great. Nokia has developed a self charging phone, and is applying to patent the technology. A phone that is capable of charging itself means no more plug-ins and no worrying about running out of battery when you're in the worst of conditions.

The phone's battery will use piezoelectric crystals, a substance that creates an electric current when bent or compressed. In years past, these crystals must be created using ultra high temperatures that would damage most materials such as plastic. Now, researchers at Princeton University have developed a way to "print" these crystals on rubber.

Not only will this technology be useful on phones, it will be useful on music players, flashlights, and other products that people carry around.

Basically, the special crystals are installed on tracks in the frame of the phone. As someone moves around, the crystals are compressed and create electricity, which is stored in a battery.

There's no word on when the self charging phone will be available on the market, as the company is currently applying for a patent.

Others have tried create self charging phones, one with a finger hole in it where you twirl the phone if the battery is low. However, this type of charging won't hold for much more than 2 minutes of talk time, which is highly inconvenient for many.

March 12 (Reuters) - Top phone makers Nokia (NOK1V.HE) and Apple (AAPL.O) will seek a U.S. court hearing in a key patent battle in mid-2012, a court filing showed, raising the spectre of a prolonged legal struggle [ID:nLDE62B0OX].

Following are the key developments in the legal battle:

NOKIA OCTOBER ATTACK

Nokia filed a suit in the United States in October 2009, accusing Apple of infringing 10 patents in technologies including wireless data transfer, a key factor in the success of iPhone. The suit accused Apple of trying to hitch a "free ride" on Nokia's technology investment. [ID:nLM664007]

APPLE COUNTERATTACK

Apple filed a countersuit on Dec. 11 accusing Nokia of infringing 13 Apple patents. [ID:nN11260646]

It later removed four patents from the list.

"Other companies must compete with us by inventing their own technologies, not just by stealing ours," Bruce Sewell, Apple's General Counsel, said in a statement.

Nokia and Apple expect trials to take place in 2012.

ITC

On Dec. 29 Nokia said it had filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) alleging that Apple infringes seven Nokia patents in virtually all of its mobile phones, portable music players, and computers. [ID:nLDE5BS173]

Nokia Is Coming to America — Still - New York Times (blog)

"It is about renewal."

That's what David Rivas, a vice president at Nokia, told a gathering of reporters in San Francisco on Wednesday about his company's new phones based on the Symbian^3 operating system. Nokia is betting that the revamped software will help revitalize its smartphone business and drum up interest for its products in the United States. Phones running Symbian^3 should appear within the next three months.

It's a tad unsettling to hear Nokia executives talk about things like "renewal" and apologize for the awkwardness of current Symbian-based phones. After all, Symbian was in 47 percent of all smartphones shipped last year, according to Gartner, giving it the same amount of market share as the smartphone operating systems from Research In Motion (maker of the BlackBerry), Apple, Microsoft and Google combined. One might think Nokia executives have earned the right to brag rather than humbly promising better days to come.

But Nokia's smartphone market share has been on the decline with current versions of Symbian looking dated and feeling limited. Complicating matters is the fact that Americans have developed a fascination with smartphones but can hardly find a really nice Nokia phone in major retail outlets, as Paul Boutin at VentureBeat pointed out in a recent article.

Symbian^3 could get Nokia back on the right track, Mr. Rivas said.

The software offers something rather different from the icon-laden BlackBerrys, iPhones and Android devices out there.

It has a home screen that's cordoned off into segments, which the user can customize. You might choose a calendar block that shows appointments, a Facebook block with friends' status updates and a contacts block that has pictures from people in your address book. And, if you still want icons, you can have an icon block as well to make starting certain applications easier.

In total, the interface has a bit more spit and polish than the current version of Symbian.

The flashier bits and bobs come through the solid support for things like multitouch, multitasking and strenuous graphics jobs like displaying album art from the music player at a quick clip.

For the reporters never satisfied with the almost here and almost now, Mr. Rivas dangled the promise that Symbian^4 phones, due at the end of this year, "will try to raise the bar" even higher.

(Symbian is now an open-source project, and you can see some of Nokia's proposals for the direction Symbian^4 should take here. The advances seem modest to me and to people commenting on that site, but it's still early.)

One of the more compelling cases Nokia makes around Symbian is the company's ability to lower the price of smartphones. Through its backing of the Qt software development system, Nokia has helped lower the cost for building smartphone applications.

In addition, Nokia has spent years on the localization grunt work needed to tune phones for various regions. Mr. Rivas contended, for example, that Nokia was producing phones that cater to various Indian regional dialects while other phone makers are just beginning to understand what it takes to sell phones in India.

Meanwhile, Nokia has existing relationships with just about every carrier and operator on the planet. (Although, such "relationships" seems rocky at best with some of the carriers in the United States.)

There's proof stateside to back up Mr. Rivas' low-cost claims.

In the United States, T-Mobile will soon (possibly this month) begin selling the Nokia Nuron smartphone for $69.99 with a two-year contract, while Nokia will sell it for a surprisingly low $179 without any service contract.

"That is what all those years of Symbian development let us do," Mr. Rivas said.

Nokia keeps insisting that it will support Symbian for the long-term even though it has another operating system that can run on smartphones.

Nokia already offers the Linux-based Maemo software on its high-end N900 smartphone. (I've been testing this device out, and actually prefer it to an iPhone, although it is quite a bit chunkier.)

In the future, Nokia will ditch Maemo in favor of MeeGo, which is another Linux-based operating system that is a result of the combination of Maemo and Moblin, from Intel. (I recommend building a flowchart to keep track of all this.)

Nokia and Intel hope to get MeeGo running on electronics as varied as smartphones, cars, tablets, laptops and refrigerators.

Mr. Rivas maintained that Symbian and MeeGo offered phone makers and developers a less conflicted path than Android, from Google.

Google, of course, managed to garner widespread support for Android only to turn around and ship its own phone based on the software. While Nokia also sells phones based on open-source software that it supports, the company has a more "open" stance around Symbian and MeeGo than Google does with Android, Mr. Rivas said.

"Anyone can go to the Symbian Web site and see what features will be coming months in advance," Mr. Rivas said. "Show me where you can do that with Android."

Meanwhile, Nokia gives developers a chance to write applications that may end up on phones in just about every country in the world.

Is this a strong enough pitch to slow Android's obvious partner momentum? You could find plenty of people that would issue a hearty no, but Mr. Rivas holds out hope.

"I do know that the dynamics of this have not played out yet," he said.

Our appetite for YouTube knows now bounds, whether it be an afternoon of demolition fails or merely a little taste of rocket-powered trucks. So we're always glad to hear about an improvement to the YouTube app that can slake our autotune addiction.

Google has released a new version of the YouTube app for Windows Mobile and Nokia S60 phones -- that's most Nokia smart phones. The new app adds support for your YouTube account, so you can access your favourites, subscriptions and playlists.

"Let's say you have recently found an amazing basketball shot video and favourited it on your desktop PC," Google says on its mobile blog. "When you're at the basketball court with your friends all you need to do is launch the YouTube app and go to your Favourites to show it to them."

We took the new app for a spin on a Nokia X6. We appreciated how easy Google makes it to download the app, which is often a faff on Nokia phones. We just had to visit m.youtube.com/app in our phone's browser and the download started automatically. The page also offered tips as to where we could find the app in our phone's convoluted menu system once we installed it.

Getting online in the app wasn't straightforward -- although we had active 3G and Wi-Fi connections going, the app still made us pick between some baffling options. Still, that might be a phone problem the app can't control.

Another flaw was the size of some of the menu options. Although the main buttons are big enough, menus such as the one to choose your country are way too small -- we accidentally poked Sweden three times before we managed to nail the UK.

Google says the app also gives you suggestions when you start typing in the search box, but this feature works poorly on many touchscreen Nokias. That's because when you use a text box, the phone chucks you out of the app's interface into a dedicated typing screen. You have to type something, click to say you're done, and then you're sent back to the YouTube app to see your search suggestions. It's not much of a time-saver.

On the other hand, logging into our account was fast and easy, and all of our videos seemed to be present and correct.

Overall, YouTube on Nokia still struggles to compete with the experience you'd get on an iPhone or Android phone. But it's much better than nothing, and it's free, so we'd still recommend you give the new YouTube app a try.

Motorola's Mobile Phone Pricing Expected to Rise Through 2011 - Trefis

Motorola (NYSE:MOT) has been facing tough competition from RIM's (NASDAQ:RIMM) BlackBerry, Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone and Nokia's (NYSE:NOK) N-Series of smartphones. As Motorola increases its mix of smartphones to adapt to higher smartphone demand, the company could actually see an increase in the average price of a Motorola phone while the average price of phones for its competitors continue to decline.

Below we explain the significance of the mobile phones business for Motorola's stock and why we believe that Motorola mobile phone pricing could increase through 2011.

Mobile Phones 27% of Motorola's Stock

Motorola's mobile phone business constitutes 27% of the $7.19 Trefis price estimate for Motorola's stock. Despite selling 55 million mobile phones in 2009, the company had mobile phone market share of only 4.5%.

Motorola introduced the Droid and Cliq smarpthones in 2009 but only 2 million of the 55 million Motorola phones sold during the year were smartphones. We expect that Motorola's smartphone mix of phones sold will continue to increase over time.

Higher Prices from Increasing Smartphone Mix

Motorola plans to launch 20 new smartphones in 2010 with expected sales of around 11-14 million smartphones. This would mean that smartphones will constitute around 25% of the total mobile phones that we expect Motorola to sell in 2010. We believe this ratio will reach 50% by 2011 and that Motorola will sell a total of 53 million mobile phones in 2011.

Motorola's average mobile phone pricing was $130 in 2009 and we believe that an increasing mix of higher-priced smartphones will push up average mobile phone pricing for Motorola to $143 in 2010 and $150 in 2011.

However, as Motorola increases its smartphone ratio past 50% in the years beyond 2011, it could see a decline in average pricing due to increasing commoditization of smartphones.

We expect that average mobile phone prices for Motorola's smartphone competitors will fall over the next few years. For example, we expect Apple iPhone pricing to decline from $582 in 2009 to $365 by the end of Trefis forecast period. Similarly, we expect RIM BlackBerry to reduce its pricing from $341 in 2009 to $223 by the end of Trefis forecast period.

Skype and Nokia unveil app for Symbian phones - NetworkWorld.com

VoIP service Skype has unveiled an app for Nokia mobile phones running the Symbian platform that allows users to make free calls to other Skype users from their handsets.

The app, which is compatible with a number of Nokia phones including including the N97, the X6 and the 5800 XpressMusic, will route Skype calls over the internet using the handset's Wi-Fi or 3G connection and can be downloaded for free from Nokia's Ovi store.

The Skype app also lets users send and receive instant messages from other Skype users when they are online, save money when making calls or sending text messages to international numbers and receive calls directed to their Skype number on their handset.

The Nokia N97 is one of the handsets compatible with the new Skype app

"We're seeing around 1.5 million downloads a day on Ovi Store now and believe that the Skype client for Nokia smartphones will have wide appeal to Symbian users," said Jo Harlow, senior vice president for Smartphones at Nokia.

The app will run on any Nokia handset using Symbian ^1, the latest version of the Symbian platform.

Skype also revealed it planned to make the app available for handsets running the platform from other manufacturers, including Sony Ericsson, in the coming months.

Nokia has branched out quite a bit in recent years with its smartphone line of Symbian handsets. The E series in particular has usually been quite business-centric, like the Nokia E71 for example, but the E 50 series tend to be a bit more attractive to consumers. Take the Nokia E55 for instance. It offers all the smartphone benefits of e-mail, GPS with Nokia's OVI Maps, Wi-Fi, support for North American 3G bands, and PC-syncing, but it also has multimedia goodies like a 3.2-megapixel camera with video recording, a music player, plus a 3.5mm headset jack. The E55's superslim profile and hybrid keyboard also gives it that consumer appeal. Finally, the E55 is surprisingly affordable at $339 for an unlocked phone.

Design
When the Nokia E55 debuted last year in Barcelona during Mobile World Congress, Nokia boasted that it was the world's thinnest smartphone. While we can't verify this claim, the E55 is indeed the thinnest smartphone we've ever held in our hands. Measuring 4.57 inches long by 1.93 inches wide by 0.39 inch thick, the E55 is long and lean. And though it's so skinny, it weighs around 3.46 ounces, which gives it a solid feel in the hand. The back battery cover is clad in a spun metal surface that provides a nice grip as well. The E55 comes in both black and white.

The 2.4-inch display dominates much of the E55's front surface. It's a nontouch screen, but it does support up to 16 million colors. It's really colorful, vibrant, and has an interesting light-sensing technology that adjusts the brightness depending on the environment. You can adjust the Home screen's background image, theme, font size, backlight timer, and choose the menu layout as well. You can also change the "call image," which is the image that shows up when there's an incoming call.

The E55 also lets you alternate between "Personal mode" and "Business mode," with the idea that you can easily switch between the two depending on your situation. In Business mode, you'll get access to work tools like e-mail and your calendar, while Personal mode gives you easy access to multimedia applications and the like. This seems a little arbitrary, since you could easily access these other apps regardless of mode, but it's a nice setting to have if you want it.

Underneath the display, you'll find the navigation array, which consists of two soft keys, a middle square toggle with a center select key, shortcut keys for Home, the Calendar, and Email, a Back key, and the Talk and End keys. Below that is a hybrid QWERTY keyboard where two letters share the same key, similar to RIM's SureType keyboard. While we know not everyone likes this style of keyboard, we actually don't mind it so much. Especially since the E55 has pretty good predictive text and can guess our words as we're typing them. The keys themselves are well-spaced and are slightly slanted so we can dial by feel. Perhaps our only complaint is that they feel a little soft when pressed.

On the left is the charger jack, while on the right are the volume rocker, a user-programmable shortcut key, and the camera key. At the top are the 3.5mm headset jack and the power switch. The camera lens is on the back, as well as an LED flash. The microSD card slot is located behind the battery cover.

The Top 10 Free Travel Apps - PC Magazine

I travel a lot. I'm out of town at least once a month, for business or for pleasure. And as the mobile-phone guy, I'm never without a smartphone - whether it's my Nokia E72, the latest BlackBerry, a Google Android phone or an iPhone 3GS.

A modern phone is pretty close to the ultimate travel gadget, letting you tap into all sorts of useful information on the road. Here are 10 travel apps that I use regularly when I'm out of town. Feel free to add your other favorites to the comments below.

1. Google Maps. The single most useful travel app is available on every smartphone, and in fact on any Web phone. Google Maps tells you where you are, where anything else is, and how to get between those two spots. When I needed diapers in Barcelona on a Sunday, Google Maps knew where the three nearest OpenCor convenience stores were, and even gave me subway directions. Google Maps is available for pretty much every smartphone, and many non-smartphones.

2. TripIt. There are a lot of "travel management" programs out there that help you keep track of things like flight confirmation numbers, hotel confirmation numbers and such. I prefer TripIt, because it's extremely good at parsing the confirmation emails you get from hotels and airlines. TripIt has apps for Android, BlackBerry and iPhone, and you can access your data from even the simplest phones by sending them to m.tripit.com.

3. TripCase. I love TripIt, but Sabre's TripCase does a few awesome things TripIt doesn't do. TripCase gives you continually updated flight delay and gate status for your flights, and suggests alternate flights if you're about to miss yours. That said, it can be a bear to import more than just basic flights into TripCase; you often end up generating multiple duplicate itineraries and having to merge them. So I use both TripCase and TripIt. TripCase is available for BlackBerry, Windows Mobile and iPhone.

4. Kayak. There are many travel-booking apps, but Kayak is my pick for the simplest, smoothest, easiest, quickest and most complete. The app lets you search for flights, hotels, and car rentals using Kayak's reliable meta-search engine, which captures the fares both from travel agencies and from vendors' own sites. I used it most recently while standing on a rainy street in Philadelphia trying to nab my family a flight to Las Vegas. Kayak's apps are available for Android, BlackBerry and iPhone.

5. Yelp. I have spent too much time wandering the streets of San Francisco looking for a burrito. Really, I have. Yelp is the king of the user-review sites - especially for restaurants in major American cities - and their mobile app is an excellent way to search for places to eat. The Yelp app is available for BlackBerry and iPhone, but other phone owners can just go to m.yelp.com with their browsers.

6. WeatherBug. There are lots of mobile weather apps, and some are better on some platforms than on others. WeatherBug delivers a solid experience across a range of OSes including Android, BlackBerry, iPhone, Windows Mobile and Nokia. Beyond basic weather, it does a few tricks like integrating with your contact list and letting you tap on maps to see how the weather is where you're going.

7. SitOrSquat. I have an adorable four year old daughter. And guess what? She needs to pee! SitOrSquat is a crowdsourced bathroom locator that can take you a step beyond the old mainstay of hotel lobbies in most US cities. It's a pity it doesn't work nearly as well overseas, where I assume the "squat" part comes in handy. The app is available for BlackBerry and iPhone.

8. JiWire Wi-Fi Finder. If you travel internationally with an iPhone, you know you basically have to turn off cellular data, or when you get back to the States, you'll find your house mortgaged to AT&T. JiWire's WiFi Finder only exists as an app for iPhone, but iPhoners really need it; it tells you where the next little puddle of Wi-Fi will be for you to huddle in while you desperately transfer information from the Internet.

9. Priceline Hotel Negotiator. I have a real soft spot for Priceline - I wrote a book about them, after all. Their Hotel Negotiator app, available only on the iPhone, lets you book last-minute hotels at super-cheap rates up until 11 PM ET. Its slick, Shatner-laden interface certainly beats my attempts to bid on Priceline via a BlackBerry browser in Toronto a few years ago, which was pretty painful to do.

10. Google SMS. OK, stick with me for a moment. A lot of people don't have smartphones, or they're in places where their smartphones' data plans don't work. Relatively few people know that if you SMS some search terms to 46645 - that's "GOOGL" - you'll get Google search results back as a series of texts. A quick text for "Bagel near 11372" recently got me a nice warm breakfast on a cold street in Queens.

Mikko Hyppönen, the chief research officer of the Finnish security firm F-Secure, said that so far the industry has done a remarkable job in averting the proliferation of mobile device attacks. Device manufacturers, operators and system developers have worked closely with security researchers to prevent mobile devices from suffering the fate of the virus-prone personal computer.

"In the big picture, this is a success story, and there are very few success stories in the security space. I get the feeling that the mobile industry gets it. Nobody wants to repeat the mistakes done with computers. We haven't been able to stop all malware attacks, but we have been able to delay them for a number of years," Hyppönen said.

Several researchers like him have been predicting since last year that the topic will become a hot one sooner than later. F-Secure - which is based in Helsinki, a few miles away from Nokia, the largest manufacturer of mobile phones - has kept a close eye on mobile security for some time.

Researchers have identified fewer than 500 pieces of mobile malware, the majority of which attack Nokia's Symbian, the operating system for almost half of the world's mobile devices (although its share of the U.S. market is significantly lower). That is a microscopic amount compared with the millions of pieces of computer malware that researchers detect every day.

And unlike computer viruses, researchers have identified only mobile malware that depends on some level of human interaction to download and install itself.

But despite all the good work, experts predict it won't be long before malware infests the mobile space.

Hyppönen showed during an RSA Conference presentation a piece of malware promoted as an application to improve mobile browsing speed by allegedly moving data through text messages. In reality, the virus automatically sends text messages from victims' phones to premium-rate numbers operated by criminals.

"These are the first examples of criminals stealing money from your device by making phone calls or sending text messages," Hyppönen said.

He also mentioned SexyView.D, which he described as the first iPhone worm that attacks phones used by English speakers. The virus, which only affected "jail-broken" iPhones (devices modified to work with other phone service providers), spreads through text messages containing malicious links and re-sends itself to the victim's list of contacts once inside.

Mobile security products already exist and many others are in the works. Hyppönen and other researchers believe that the number of smart phones will surpass computers in a few years and, when that happens, criminals will have the motivation to focus their efforts on attacking phones.

"Sooner or later, we'll see the first exploit attack, and when we do, everything will change," he said.

With over one billion Nokia phones sold, the Finnish mobile giant is hoping to strengthen its position with more versatile designs and software.

Using gestures to control your phone is the next big thing and Nokia is on the ball.

In 2008, the Finnish mobile giant conducted research in four major cities — Mumbai, Chicago, Shanghai and London — where it asked volunteers to use their phones in unique ways to complete a task.

For instance, they were asked to silence an incoming call without using any of the phone's buttons, said Younghee Jung, Nokia's senior design specialist.

The company received rather unexpected responses — to silence the phone some preferred to knock the phone several times, stare at it angrily or just point at it.

From the research, the company managed to map 60 unique gestures to 15 commonly used tasks such as silencing an incoming call, sharing contact info between two phones and using the GPS when the user is lost.

The results were then presented to another test group to gauge how they would respond to them, Jung said.

Not surprisingly, users were mostly concerned with how they would look when performing the gestures. Some found certain gestures were just odd, uncool or attracted too much attention.

Waving the phone to find out your location, for instance, would attract unwanted action — after all, you wouldn't want to publicise the fact that you are lost.

And some complained that knocking the phone to silence it could potentially damage the phone, she said.

Nokia still hasn't decided which gestures will be introduced in its upcoming phones as it is still finetuning the commands.

Also, the company is also looking into introducing gestures that users can customise but this is still at a very early stage, she said.

"Using gestures to control the phone might be natural and cool to the younger generation but there are still a lot of people who will find it challenging, " Jung said.

So, Nokia would also have to embark on an education campaign to get users to become familiar with using gestures, she said.

Maps for the masses

Apart from gestures, Nokia focused on its efforts in mapping at a showcase event in Bangkok recently.

The company believes that standalone GPS units are popular but they are still not as verstaile as a phone with a built-in GPS. "A standalone GPS unit is either good for car navigation or pedestrian navigation but not for both unlike a Nokia phone," claimed Jukka Hosio, director of Nokia's marketing services.

To this end, Nokia has released an updated version of Ovi Maps which now improves both car and pedestrian navigation in several ways.

The maps now include lane assist, 3D landmarks, and voice guided navigation in 43 languages and more.

But the most important aspect of a map is its accuracy as they have to be constantly updated.

Nokia's recently acquired subsidiary, Navteq, has been tasked to verify the maps by having its employees drive around in cars to ensure that the map is always updated and accurate.

At this stage, Navteq is focusing on the bigger cities first and it has started verifying the street maps for over 80 cities.

The company claims it has verified 93,000km of Kuala Lumpur but it declined to say when other major cities in Malaysia will be covered.

In some parts of the cities, Navteq also has its employees ride a bicycle to make sure that the maps are accurate for pedestrian navigation.

In this case the map would be accurate enough to guide a user to take a shortcut through, say, a park to reach the destination.

"It is Navteq's exercise programme for its employees," he quipped.

Nokia also claims that its Ovi Maps is 10 times more efficient than Google Maps in terms of data usage.

Because the phone already includes a base map, a data connection is only made to update it with the latest info. This means that users do not have to worry about data charges as the data usage will be very minimal, Hosio said.

Ovi Maps is free and the new version is compatible with 11 phones including the N97, XpressMusic 5800 and E72.

The app can be downloaded from maps.nokia.com.

Designing icons

Nokia said it has also gone to great lengths to design icons for its phones.

"Lots of effort was spent for something people may not notice but that's the point — the experience must be seamless," said Robert William, Nokia's design manager.

Creating an icon that represents the same action for more that one billion Nokia users with different backgrounds and cultures is very challenging, he said.

"Pictures speak a thousand words, we need our icons to speak more than 80 languages," he added.

Also, the icons have to change with time as people's association with them changes.

For instance, the icon for Contacts, which was represented by a phone is no longer accurate because the contact information can now contain more than phone numbers.

So, Nokia has updated the Contacts icon to a phonebook with a silhouette of a person as Nokia believes that you think about the person first and the contact information later.

Similarly, other icons have also been changed over time such as the Gaming and Music icons.

One of the few icons that has remained largely unchanged is the Messaging icon which is still represented by an envelope because everyone all over the world still associates it with messaging, he said.

No PC, no problem

E-mail access is a non-issue for most people but a lot of rural areas still do not have even the basic infrastructure for connecting a computer to the Internet.

However, as long as there is mobile coverage, users can now sign up for e-mail access directly from their Nokia phone without using a computer, said Chris Carr, vice-president for sales for Nokia South-East Asia Pacific.

Nokia has also teamed up with 70 telco operators globally and eight operators in South-East Asia Pacific to make configuring e-mail access much easier.

The company is in the process of working with local telcos but declined to comment further.

Skype and Nokia unveil app for Symbian phones - NetworkWorld.com

VoIP service Skype has unveiled an app for Nokia mobile phones running the Symbian platform that allows users to make free calls to other Skype users from their handsets.

The Nokia N97 is one of the handsets compatible with the new Skype app

The app will run on any Nokia handset using Symbian ^1, the latest version of the Symbian platform.

Skype also revealed it planned to make the app available for handsets running the platform from other manufacturers, including Sony Ericsson, in the coming months.

Nokia Stealth and Dragonfly concept phones - UberGizmo (blog)

Nokia's Stealth and Dragonfly concept phones do look rather interesting, with the former being a mid-range handset, obviously inspired by stealth aircraft in its design that boasts an "ergonomically sculpted keypad, easy to navigate by touch sensations." As for the Nokia Dragonfly, this more or less resembles an entry-level handset, although certain quarters might deem it to be a whole lot better looking compared to the Stealth. We do wonder whether anyone from Nokia will pick either design up or not.
